As an introduction to Bilbao and the Basque Country, we suggest a tour of the city on the first day.
By coach and foot we will explore the city that changed so much over the last years and therefore has so much to offer and to tell. After a panoramic tour by bus that will give us a first insight of the city, its location between the hills and its origin, we will go along the river to enjoy the fabulous views on the Guggenheim Museum and the entire renovated part of the city. In the old town, the narrow streets invite to loose yourself in between them and the Ribera market invites you to take a look at the fresh fish and all the local products that are sold here.
The tour finishes with a lunch in a typical local restaurant named Atea and where a nice set menu including drinks will be served.
In the morning, after breakfast, our guide and coach takes us along the Basque coast to the wonderful town of San Sebastian, close to the French border. The transfer time is approximately 1 hour.
Upon arrival a short panoramic city tour by coach will be done. Afterwards we will continue to explore the city by foot.
We will stroll or drive along the beautiful Concha bay and beach, dive into the old quarter and of course we will see all major attractions such as Cathedral, the San Telmo Museum, Kursaal, the fishing harbor and the town hall.
For lunch, we suggest a restaurant that offer beautiful views on the bay and offers good local food.
After lunch, free time to enjoy San Sebastian on your own before we take the coach back to Bilbao in the afternoon.
Third day in the Basque Country, and on the program what is undoubtedly the highlight of the Bilbao – the Guggenheim Museum.
Being in Bilbao and not visiting the Guggenheim Museum is almost considered as a blasphemy of art.
Designed by American architect Frank Gehry, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao building represents a magnificent example of the most groundbreaking 20th-century architecture. With 24,000 m2, of which 11,000 are dedicated to exhibition space, the Museum represents an architectural landmark of audacious configuration and innovating design, providing a seductive backdrop for the art exhibited in it.
During the tour of about 1,5 hours the current exhibitions will be visited and explained but we also put a lot of focus on the building itself as its the biggest piece of art of the museum.
After the tour, lunch in the Bistró Guggenheim. The Guggenheim Bistró is an informal restaurant, steeped in the style and personality of its location and with a clear aim: to bring the public closer to the latest culinary techniques. This is reflected in the range of traditional dishes reinterpreted from the point of view of avant-garde cuisine.
Today our way takes us into the interior of the Basque Country as we head to the beautiful Rioja Alavesa region. We will first arrive at, which Casa Primicia is the oldest building in the town of Laguardia. In this emblematic place, the Church used to collect tithes from its serfs, consisting of one tenth of the harvest. During the tour we will learn about the history of wines over the time. At the end of the tour, we will taste two different wines that are produced here in the winery.
Lunch will be taken in a local restaurant in the medieval town of Laguardia. Local specialties and, of course, goo wine will be served.
Afterwards we visit Laguardia. Founded in the 10th century as a defensive stronghold of the Kingdom of Navarre, Laguardia stands on a small hill and its medieval layout has been preserved almost intact. At either end of the village, you will find the fortified churches of San Juan Bautista and Santa María de los Reyes, with its exceptional, superbly-conserved polychrome 17th-century portico. Another small, underground winery can be visited here in Laguardia.
In the afternoon we head back to Bilbao.
The boat trip starts in the city centre of Bilbao and will last for about 2 hours. We cruise along the main monuments such as the Guggenheim Museum, the White Bridge and make our way towards the ocean.
Upon arrival in the port area, we will ride below the hanging bridge of Bilbao,UNESDO world heritage and a very impressive building. On the
The boat has two decks, an upper deck for 30 guests and good weather and a lower deck for another 50 guests.
After the tour, lunch at the restaurant Café Iruña. This restaurant is famous because of its original interior of the 300 square meters. The room is divided into different spaces where the quality of the tiles and the unique decoration catches one’s eye.
The tour duration is specified in every tour description.
All the tours will start from the conference desk at the Euskalduna Conference Center from the EUROPYTHON PARTNER PROGRAM TOUR START sign.
We will send you the invoice by email.
